Get to know Peru through working as a volunteer in one of our projects!

 

State School with Kindergarten

This school in the center of Cusco has a kindergarten and primary and secondary schooling.

 

The children and youths come solely from socially underprivileged families. There are internship possibilities in the kindergarten sector where about 100 children aged 4 and 5 are being cared for.

Priority is given to creative playing, encouragement of the different forms of expression and communication, drawing and doing handicrafts.

 

Participation of interns: Kindergarten teachers, physiotherapists, teachers, students.

Anybody with social work experience and empathy who enjoys creative participation.

 

Period: From March until mid-December – minimum of 1 months on 5 weekdays

Working hours: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., sometimes also in the afternoons

Orphanage

img class="img02" src="http://www.acupari.com/img/orphanage-06-026.jpg" alt="" />Private Institution (NGO), supported by Spain. In this home are living up to 45 orphans, boys and girls, including about 20 infants. The maximum age is 14 years.

The majority of the children have been placed there by juvenile court. The older children attend a nearby state school in the morning.

 

Requested participation of interns: Care and tending of babies and smaller children, help with homework, recreational activities, participation in the kitchen, preparation of meals.

 

Period: All year – minimum of 2 months on 5 weekdays

Either in the morning or in the afternoon

Lunch together possible if working all day

On weekends volunteer work is also needed but not an obligation.

 

Street Children’s Home and Orphanage

This public institution is part of the Ministry for Women and Social Development in Peru. About 60 children (mainly street children) from 5 to 18 years live in this home, but not all of them sleep there. Some of these children are orphans, others come from socially underprivileged families. They are offered a home, meals, clothes and medical care. Integral part of the program is permanent consultation and psychological attendance as well as manual work in different workshops.

Period: All year – minimum of 2 months on 5 weekdays

Women's refuge

This non-profit supporting organization is an NGO (non-governmental organization). The facility, a house with patio, is in a suburb of Cusco about a 30-minute bus-ride away from the city center. In this home, young mothers between 13 and 18 years with babies or small children are received and being cared for. These mothers come from very poor backgrounds and were sexually abused. Mainly about 40 small children and up to 20 mothers live here. During their stay the mothers have the opportunity to graduate from school, they are being trained in workshops and receive psychological and medical attendance as well as legal consultation and assistance.

 

The goal is to prepare the young mothers for an independent life and to strengthen their self-esteem. Even after the young women have left the home they continue to receive support and keep in touch with the employees.

Hospital

After your Spanish course, you can volunteer in a hospital in Cusco. Note though that only students of medicine or volunteers with job experience in the medical sector are accepted. The municipal hospital treats mostly patients without medical insurance from the poorer sectors of the population. The children's Leukaemia wing works in close cooperation with Hannover Medical School, so language students from ACUPARI are very welcome there.

Children’s Clinic

The Children’s Clinic is a church institution with both state and private support. This hospital was founded in Cusco in 1982 and is a branch of a large children’s hospital in Lima.

In the clinic there are between 40 and 50 physically and mentally handicapped children under medical treatment. The majority of them comes from poor farmer families from remote villages.

 

In addition to that there is an extensive outpatient clinic with daily about 120 ambulant treatments and medical consultations. Part of this is orthopedics, traumatology, dentistry, pediatrics, obstetrics, as well as a laboratory, an X-ray center and a rehabilitation ward for physical therapy, hydrotherapy and logopedics.

 

Participation of interns:

  • Children’s Clinic: physiotherapists, nurses, med students
  • School for mentally and physically handicapped children: experience in orthopedagogy/ therapeutic pedagogy and logopedics, social work, creative participation, care in general
  • Period: all year – minimum of 2 months on 5 weekdays either in the morning or in the afternoon

In the jungle/Agriculture

Manu National Reserve, cultural zone, Chontachaca

 

Chontachaca is deep in the Peruvian jungle and can only be reached by boat. In the project "Palmaceda" our volunteers can work in a kindergarten as well as in agriculture.

 

Rates: US$ 48,00 per day - including:

- Journey Cusco-Pilcopata-Cusco with local bus

- Accommodation with half-board

 

Ceja de Selva – Quillabamba

Boarding school, kindergarten and primary school

Here you have the opportunity to help with agricultural work on a private farm. The price of accommodation and meals is negotiated with the farm owners. The work offered depends on the season.

 

Accommodation expenses: 20,00 US$ per day – included: half-board accommodation

 

Private finca outside of Quillabamba

The offered work at the farm depends on the season.

Board and lodging has to be negotiated with the farm owners.
