General Information

The Manu National Park
, named after the Manu River, was declared “World Biosphere Reserve” by the UNESCO in 1977, and later, in 1987 Natural Heritage of Humanity. Due to its different altitudes, the Park comprises several eco-systems, in which more than 860 species of birds, 200 species of mammals, a great variety of reptiles, including the boa constrictor, and 10% of all existing plants on Earth can be found.

The park covers a surface of almost 2.000.000 m², where approximately 20,000 native inhabitants live. A significant number of different ethnic groups are tribes which have never been in contact with the modern world and others are still nomads.
The biggest and best known group is the Machiguengas that is one of the few tribes that resisted the expansion of the Inca Empire.

The Intangible Zone (“Zona Núcleo o Zona Intangible”)
The native population lives in this sector, which is the protected area of the National Park. Outsiders cannot enter this restricted area.

The Reserved Zone (“Zona de Amortiguación o Zona Reservada”)

This area is for research, and tourism is allowed in a limited way. All the projects and programs are under permanent government supervision.

The Cultural Zone („Zona Cultural”)
This area at the verge of the Manu Park is open to everybody. There are both private and public properties for the agricultural use of the natural resources. The populations main activities are agriculture and livestock farming. Many people work also in inter-region commerce and tourism.
