Nazca Lines endangered by floods
The Nazca Lines are regarded as runways for
extraterrestrial by UFO investigators, archaeologists
consider them as a historic site for sacrifice and
for the users of GoogleEarth, they are the cult.
Nowadays, however, the destruction of the lines seems
imminent. They are one the greatest enigmas for scientists.
Over a surface of 500 Square kilometers, the lines
are extended through the Peruvian coast, sometimes
straight, and others swinging. From the air, different
figures can be observed: birds, fish and hands. Some
of them are more than 20 kilometers long.
After heavy rains, rivers are flooding the area; thus,
threatening the lines with destruction. “We
have never seen so much water in the desert before”,
claimed a Peruvian pilot.
The mysterious lines were first identified in the
1920’s. Archaeologists initially believed the
lines were developed as rituals of the Nazca Culture
(200 b.C -600 a.C.) Up until today, it is still unclear
what the purpose to build the lines was.

Peru, Chile and Bolivia: Touristic Route will
connect these three countries.
At the end of this year, the road that will connect
the three Andean countries Peru, Chile and Bolivia
should be finished. The road will have a length of
1,826 kilometers and will have an average altitude
of 3,800 meters above sea level. The governments of
the three countries made this project possible in
order to promote tourism and new economic sources
in this macro-region.
The route starts in Chile, in San Pedro de Atacama,
and continues to Ollagüe, Salar de Coposa, Huasco,
Lirima, Colchane, Lago Chungará, Putre and
Visviri.
From here, it goes to Bolivia, where a cultural route
in La Paz and Desaguadero is planned. Afterwards,
it crosses Puno, Cusco and Arequipa. This part of
the route goes by thermal springs, mountain tops,
volcanoes, and unique landscape. 2007 will be marketed
with a very interesting concept “one destination,
three countries”.
This route will attract domestic as well as European,
American and Asian tourism.

Volcano Ubinas about to erupt
The volcano Ubinas, located in Arequipa, has shown
high activity since the end of March. A great number
of inhabitants of the Moquegua Region had to be evacuated
from the danger area in order to avoid the occasional
explosions and the heavy dust coming from the volcano.
There is great concern in the region because nobody
knows whether the volcano will erupt or not. The government
has already sent food, tents, blankets and medicine
to the region. Further evacuation might be required
The interest of tourists to visit this area has significantly
increased. The eruption of the volcano has attracted
the attention not only of tourists but also of business
people because it will be like a nature theater play.
The people in the tourism industry want to take advantage
of this new demand in the market. Therefore, guided
tours to the center of interest of researchers are
being planned and talks by geologists and volcano
experts are being prepared.

Cleaning the Inca Trail
The route of the four-day Inca Trail trek
will be closed throughout February (the wettest and
least popular season) to give the environment a break
from the constant flow of trekkers and to enable a
clean-up of the trail. However, the shorter 2 day
Inca Trail trek remains open.
