Children’s Clinic

The Children’s Clinic is a church institution with both state and private support. This hospital was founded in Cusco in 1982 and is a branch of a large children’s hospital in Lima.

In the clinic there are between 40 and 50 physically and mentally handicapped children under medical treatment, the majority of which come from poor farmer families from remote villages.

In addition to that there is an extensive outpatient clinic with daily about 120 ambulant treatments and medical consultations. Part of this is orthopedics, traumatology, dentistry, pediatrics, obstetrics, as well as a laboratory, an X-ray center and a rehabilitation ward for physical therapy, hydrotherapy and logopedics.

Associated with the clinic is also a special school center for mentally handicapped children, subdivided into kindergarten and primary school. These children come from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to the center.

Participation of interns:

Children’s Clinic: physiotherapists, nurses, med students
School for mentally and physically handicapped children: experience in orthopedagogy/ therapeutic pedagogy and logopedics, social work, creative participation, care in general
Cultivation: gardeners, help with fieldwork and greenhouses

Period
all year – minimum of 2 months on 5 weekdays
either in the morning or in the afternoon

Children’s Home and Orphanage “J”

This public institution is part of the Ministry for Women and Social Development. About 60 children (mainly street children) from 5 to 18 years live in this home, but not all of them sleep there.
Some of these children are orphans, others com from socially underprivileged families, they are offered a home, meals, clothes and medical attention. Integral part of the program is permanent consultation and psychological attendance as well as manual work in different workshops.

Participation of interns:

Social workers, physiotherapists, teachers, handicraftsmen
Anybody with social work experience and empathy who enjoys creative participation

Period
All year – minimum of 2 months on 5 weekdays
Either in the morning or in the afternoon

Orphanage “A”

Private Institution (NGO), supported by Spain.
In this home live up to 45 orphans, boys and girls, about 20 of which are babies. The maximum age is 14 years.

The majority of the children have been placed there by juvenile court. The older children attend a nearby state school in the morning.

Requested participation of interns:

Care and tending of babies and smaller children
Help with homework, recreational activities, undertakings
Participation in the kitchen, preparation of meals

Period
All year – minimum of 2 months on 5 weekdays
Either in the morning or in the afternoon
Lunch together possible if working all day

On weekends volunteer work is also needed but not an obligation.

State School with Kindergarten “H”

This school in the center of Cusco has a kindergarten and primary and secondary schooling. The children and youths come solely from socially underprivileged families.
Here there are internship possibilities in the kindergarten sector where about 100 children aged 4 and 5 are being cared for.

Priority is given to creative playing, encouragement of the different forms of expression and communication, drawing and doing handicrafts.

Participation of interns:

Kindergarteners, physiotherapists, teachers, students
Anybody with social work experience and empathy who enjoys creative participation

Period
From March until mid-December – minimum of 1 months on 5 weekdays
Working hours: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., sometimes also in the afternoons

Casa Hogar “M”

This non-profit supporting organization is an NGO (non-governmental organization). The facility, a house with patio, is in a suburb of Cusco about a 30-minute bus-ride away from the city center.
In this home or also “women’s refuge,” young mothers between 13 and 18 years with their babies or small children are admitted and being cared for. These mothers come from very poor background and were sexually abused.
Mainly about 40 small children and up to 20 mothers live here. During their stay the mothers have the opportunity to graduate from school, they are being trained in workshops and receive psychological and medical attendance as well as legal consultation and assistance.
The goal is to prepare the young mothers for an independent life and to strengthen their self-esteem. Even after the young women have left the home they continue to receive support and keep in touch with the employees.

Casa Hogar “E”

This women’s refuge, supported by a non-profit association, is in a suburb of Cusco about a 30-minute bus-ride away from the city center. Young girls and women seeking refuge from family abuse are admitted and cared for. In addition to training in tailoring and handicrafts the center also offers psychological attendance for individuals and in groups, workshops, family and legal consultation and sport activities.

Anybody with social work experience and empathy who enjoys creative participation

Period
All year – minimum of 2 months on 5 weekdays
Either in the morning or in the afternoon

Hotel

Requirements:

good language skills: English, French, German
practical experience and/ or current training in hotel business

Minimum: two months, preferably all day
